Table Tennis history in the U.S. was made on November 23-29, 2021, when the city of Houston Texas hosted the 2021 World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC), the first time playing in The Americas. This was the 56th edition of the prestigious event.
The world's best 128 table tennis players competed at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Singles (Men and Women), doubles (Men and Women) and Mixed Doubles were the main events played in the Championships.
As expected, China dominated in the medal standings, by winning 5 Gold medals out of 6 - Men's and Women's singles, Women's doubles, and Mixed doubles. However, Sweden secured the Gold medal in Men's doubles.
Team USA and China formed mixed doubles pairs to mark the 50 years of Ping Pong Diplomacy. Lily Zhang (USA) and Lin Gaoyuan (China) won the bronze medal in mixed doubles. In addition, Kanak Jha from the USA finished in the top 8 in the Men's Singles event!
Fan Zhendong of China defeated Truls Morergard of Sweden 4-0 in the finals, taking the men's singles title. Wang Manyu of China also secured the women's singles gold medal against her teammate Sun Yingsha.
